What is a drone?
An aircraft with no pilot on board — the proper name is an Unmanned Aircraft (or UAV). The pilot is still YOU — just standing on the ground.
A radio controller in your hands + a flight computer on the drone. You say where — the computer balances the motors hundreds of times a second.
First Person View — a camera on the drone streams to your screen or goggles, so you see exactly what the drone sees. You become the drone.

Find the parts — drone anatomy
How does it hover?
⬆️ Props throw air down → drone gets pushed up. That push is thrust.
⚖️ Thrust = weight → HOVER. Perfectly balanced, hanging in the air.
🚀 Spin faster → climb. Spin slower → descend. That's the whole secret.
The clever bit — props spin in opposite pairs
🌀 Diagonal partners spin the same way — neighbours spin opposite ways.
⚖️ Every spin creates a twist on the body (torque). Opposite pairs cancel each other out — so the drone doesn't spin like a top.

⚖️ These rules are law — the CAA's Drone Code, not just good manners
How high is 120 metres?
No-fly zones — where drones must not go
🛫 Every big airport has a Flight Restriction Zone — including Bristol Airport, 8 miles from here
🏟️ Crowds & events — stadiums, festivals, city centres: never over people
🏰 Special sites — prisons, military bases, royal palaces
✅ Pilots check a drone app map before every flight — green means go
The 250 gram rule — and getting registered

Under 250 g — lighter than a block of butter
Too light to do serious damage → allowed closer to people. Same height limit. Same airport rules.
🪪 Flyer ID — the pilot's test: free, online, 40 questions. Any age can take it — YOU could pass it this summer.
📋 Operator ID — registering the drone itself: an adult (18+) registers it and labels it — like number plates for the sky.
🔍 Remember Gatwick? Registration means a found drone leads straight back to its operator.
A flying camera is still a camera
🏡 Filming into gardens or windows? Not OK — same as pointing a camera over the fence.
🧍 Following or hovering over people who haven't agreed? Not OK — that's harassment, drone or not.
✅ Open countryside, your own garden, friends who said yes — film away and make something brilliant.

The drone's camera streams straight to your eyes. Lean, dive, soar — pilots say it's the closest thing to being a bird.
🏁 Racing
Neon gates, 90 mph, millimetre gaps. The Drone Racing League fills arenas — pilots qualify by video game!
🎬 One-take wonders

Meet your controller
The sticks — learn them before you fly

Height & heading — up/down to climb, left/right to spin the nose

Direction — lean the drone forward, back, left or right
Why our drones are beginner-proof
🧠 Auto-hover
Let go of the sticks and the drone just… stops. GPS and downward sensors hold it perfectly still — even in a breeze.
🏠 Return-to-home
One button and it flies itself back to the take-off point and lands. It even does this by itself if the battery runs low.
🚧 Invisible fences
We set a height and distance limit before take-off — the drone physically won't leave the flight box.
Golden rule of the afternoon: in trouble → let go of both sticks → still worried → press HOME

How Flight School works
👥 3 groups of 8 · flying group splits into pilot + crew and swaps every flight · nobody waits doing nothing
Talk like a flight crew
The challenge ladder — start at the bottom!
🛫 Take off to knee height, hold a 5-second hover, land back inside the pad zone. Smooth beats fast.
📦 Hold the drone steady inside an imaginary 1-metre box for 10 seconds — at eye height. Harder than it sounds!
🔄 Fly a rectangle around the cones — out, across, back, home — and land. A real circuit, like a real aircraft.
🎯 Land dead-centre on the pad — wheels (well, legs) on the target. Helicopter-pilot accuracy.
🏁 Through the gate, round the far cone and home — the FPV-racer taster. Only unlocked by landing Level 4.
